The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. In commercials, she appeared before moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward. She made her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
