O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was promoted to the 100th round. Her performance was highly applauded by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the second lowest. It was a shock to the judges and they recommended to the audience to vote for Melissa as the contestant with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were always top-quality that he never fell into the third place. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol straight away.
